Why Panama?

Thanks for your interest in helping with construction needs in Panama.  Since its inception in 1967, the Assemblies of God is now the largest evangelical church in the country.  Rapid growth in church and school ministries has created an ongoing demand for new churches, classrooms and school facilities.

The Jireh Good Shepherd Christian School is now the focus of our building.   Teams are urgently needed through 2007!  Can you help?  Please talk with your church leaders and complete the electronic coupon below.  Or write us at Panorama@Boyds.org.  In advance, thank you for helping us Build God’s Kingdom!

7 Good Reasons to Come to Panama:

  1. Panama is a fun and fascinating country, rich in history, occupying a strategic position in our world.

  2. Low cost, direct travel puts Panama conveniently within reach for the budget conscious.

  3. Flexible work schedules are provided based upon the individual group.  Experiences are tailored to the individual team, from rugged conditions to hotel camping.

  4. Simple and inexpensive construction makes it easy for the novice and expert to build.

  5. Opportunities for mixed teams are available of men, women and youth.

  6. The need is great for building churches and schools.  Revival has brought unprecedented growth to Panama!

  7. The children of Tocumen need your help.

 Jireh Project

The Jehovah Jireh Good Shepherd School was founded in 1997 in an old house next door to the church.  There were just 35 students that first year--kindergarten and first grade.  The school has added a grade each year and now offers preschool through tenth grade.  Of the 25 schools in Panama, Jehova Jireh has the strongest church-school relationship.  The pastor, director and growing congregation are committed to the ministry of the school.  All of our teams that visit Panama know this school.  We always include a stop.  It was the church without the walls on the hill.  But things have changed!  The church has nearly completed its enclosed sanctuary!

The church and school are strategically located in the community of Pedregal on Tocumen Way, the highway between Panama City and the international airport.  This suburban community is one of the fastest growing areas of Panama, with hundreds of new, inexpensive tract homes.  The pastor and congregation are keenly aware of the unique opportunity to reach out to its community.

The school has consistently grown in spite of very humble facilities.  Each year we've tried to help them extend the roof and put up more walls to "carve out" new classrooms.  Today there are more than 350 children and youth who are receiving a quality Christian education.  But those 350 children are crowded into 10 classrooms.  There is such a potential for growth, but not room.

It's time for an extreme makeover!  We have torn down the old house where the school started and are in the process of building a new 40' x 65' 4-story building.  We need your help!  We need at least 4 additional MAPS construction teams to come to Panama in 2008 to finish this project.  When finished, the new building with double the capacity of the school!

We hope you will consider this important need.  Construction costs continue to rise.  We estimate the remaining cost to complete the project at $60,000.  Can you help?  Please write us at Panorama@Boyds.org or send your offerings to:

Important Information

CONSTRUCTIONTypical construction uses:  concrete floor, re-bar reinforced concrete or I-beam columns and block walls,  “C” channel or I-beam welded joist roof system, with zinc sheet metal roof attached with rubber grommet screws.  Most often, the foundation and support columns are already installed when the group arrives.  Team members should bring basic hand tools, electric saws and drills.  A concrete mixer is available.

TEAMTypical MAPS trips to Panama are 8-15 days, which include two days of travel.  Mixed groups of 10-15 are ideal.  Larger groups can be a blessing as well.  Teams should plan on working at least 5 full days.  In some cases mixed groups of adult & youth function well.  At least one-third of the team should be experienced builders, with some having experience in masonry, concrete and welding.  In addition, at least one-third should be able-bodied.

COSTSEach MAPS team should raise $10-15,000 for construction materials and local labor.  If the team will be working more than 5-6 days on the construction site, or if it is a larger team, we ask that the team raise $20-25,000 or more depending upon the project, size of team and length of stay.  For smaller teams and in some unusual circumstances, a minimum of $7,500 is acceptable.

Airfare varies widely from $500 to $800.  Daily food and lodging costs will average about $40-50 per person.  Ground transportation costs are $20-$40 per person, depending upon the availability of the missionary field van and the length of stay.

PANAMAPanama is a hot and humid, tropical country.  Cotton clothing is a must.  The heat and humidity make for extreme working conditions.  Frequent water and rest breaks are important.  Sunscreen is a must.  We choose to house teams in hotels that have air conditioning for the same reason.  Panama is also a country rich in history and strategic to the world.  There are many things to see and places to visit, especially near Panama City.  Spanish is the official language.  However, many speak “some” English.  The water is safe to drink in Panama City.  Crime is high and precautions should be taken to guard valuables, including your passports.  Panama’s electrical system is 110, so typical electric tools, hairdryers, electric razors, video camera battery chargers, etc. will work just fine.  The US dollar is the official currency of Panama.  Checks on US banks and US traveler’s checks are NOT normally accepted due to a three-week wait required when cashing them.  Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted.
